you guys sick of me yet? you shoulda known, i talk a lot. well, not out loud really 🙂 and most of you know that. but i do have my moments! so yeah, i’m in madrid… how bout that. this counts as my first real time alone in a big euro-city. sevilla doesn’t count because i was staying at someone’s house and going to school. here, i’m really on my own! staying in a hostel, alone, for the first time ever! eating & drinking alone. yes, i said drinking alone 🙂

for the same reasons i like to go places alone (not that i prefer it, but sometimes i do like it), i don’t do well on my own. i like doing stuff alone because i can do it at my own pace (usually fast) and if i get lost or turned around, i only have to answer to myself. i can wander, for hours, with my map, and it’s nbd. and i can do whatever the eff i like! no set schedule, no nothin. buuuut… and there’s always a ‘but’….. i do it that way and i get done pretty fast & then run out of things to do…! ayyyy. ah well, such is life.

it’s now sunday morning, and i just woke up in madrid… madrid is actually really cool! i like it here, so far… it reminds me a lot of firenze, as sevilla was slightly comparable to montepulciano. i didn’t much like it during my walk from the train station to the center of town, but, really, do i ever like that part? especially with all my heavy bags… *sigh* i really REALLY gotta figure out a better way to effing pack!! once i got to the area i’m stayin in, i found my hostel, called Miguel Angel, it was a loooooong way upstairs. just about the same amount of stairs that my apt in paris had! oy ve. madre, you would NOT like this place. first because it’s a hostel but also because of the stairs 🙂 i am glad i was the only one here at the time- i got a chance to get situated and unpack my stuff a little and then “stuff” my pack into the tiny locker. yeah… they’re not as big as i anticipated but i got it in there 🙂

plaza mayor
a big open square like those i remember from italia, like i said… lots going on there. it’s encircled by touristy cafes and restaurants and yesterday there was a stage with lots of traditional spanish dancing by different groups. i came back to that area later and sat and watched for a little while. that’s my little “cultural bit” for this city 🙂 there were also crazy dressed up people in costumes and the ones that paint their entire bodies and try to look like statues… weirdos. lots of people there though, and i heard lots of languages. it’s apparently the center of madrid and i think any explorations start from there.

catedral de san isidro
the cathedral of madrid. not very big at all. i took a lot of cathedral pictures, as i always do, and they look just like a lot of other cathedrals. but i liked it… very pretty, and a nice spot to stop and rest.

mercado san miguel
my new favorite place! i spotted it while walking down a street toward the plaza mayor that had a lot of fun-looking places (including a belgian beer bar!). it was up on a hill and it was entirely glass-ed in. caught my attention so i went to have a look… it was like a big french market, but inside! and upscale. it was like the whole-foods of markets in europe 🙂 lots of little stalls for meats, cheeses, fruits, flowers, olives, pastries, you name it. but, the coolest part was there was also a cerveceria, a wine bar, and other spots selling tapas, plates of olives, empanadas (i had a chicken one… not quite like empanadas we have at home, these are flaky pastry-like ones, kind of like spanikopita), and *sangria.* yummy! i spent a lot of time here people watching and taking pictures and sampling things. i will definitely be going back there a few more times… it stays open late. as everything does around here…

eating/drinking
once i’d settled into my hostel i was a bit hungry, having not eaten really anything all day… found a place in my “let’s go” guide that said it had “no-frills” seafood and good sangria… and off i went: El Mejillón de Madrid: and that’s what i had. mejillones (mussels) and sangria. the mussels here are HUUUUUGE…. and they tasted like the sea!! yums 🙂 and there was a ton of them. so it was a good meal. and i was excited about sangria here, to see if it would be different here… was soooo good. definitely my new choice of drink here. later, after the mercado and all the wandering around i did, i had a cafe con leche at one point, and then, after watching the dancing at plaza mayor, decided to go have a drink in a bar and watch part of the real madrid game (fútbol). that was interesting… found a seat at a table in a small bar, but then all the girls who’d been there left, and it was just me with all the guys watching the game. huh. was still interesting though… and real madrid won. 🙂 then, for dinner, i had more tapas, near the mercado at a place called emma + cocina. had two glasses of rioja and for tapas had some lamb stew with couscous and some sort of cod florentine(?). was pretty good, but by that time i was tired, and then came home to bed.

yummm!

yummm!

i was the first one in, as expected, then right behind me was an older guy who said he was leaving in the morning so he was going to bed early. sleeping was not easy… very loud outside. they weren’t kidding about partying ALL NIGHT… i didn’t mind it, seeing as i don’t have anywhere to be today, but really! i checked the time once and it was 7am and from the noise outside it could have still been midnight or 2am or something. jeeeeez. there was one girl out there, total drama queen, on the streets below, wailing for a good 15 minutes. so! now it’s after 11 and i’m gonna maybe hit up el rastro, a huge flea market they have here on sundays. i think i’ve decided to skip toledo… a bit too late to go today and tomorrow most things are closed there. ah well.
